Overview#
TradesWork Field is the app technicians use on the job. It holds the day's appointments, the guided job flow, estimates, invoices, payments, photos, forms and equipment. It adapts to the person: technicians get the job-site app, salespeople get the Sales view for in-home selling (made for iPad), and owners get the Owner view with the business at a glance. See Switching app views. It is one app built for phones and tablets, in portrait or landscape, and it runs in a web browser today. Store versions for iPhone and Android are coming soon. Office staff keep working in the TradesWork office site; technicians do their day in TradesWork Field.
Before you start#
Technicians: you need a TradesWork account with the Technician role in your company. Your office sends you an invite (see Sign in to TradesWork Field).
Owners and admins: invite technicians in Settings › People › Employees & Role Permissions (needs users.manage or subscription.manage). Technician seats are the billed seats; office and view-only seats are free.
A modern phone or tablet browser (Safari on iPhone or iPad, Chrome on Android) with signal for the first load. After that, much of the app works offline. See Use the field app offline.
Salespeople: the Sales rep or Sales manager role. The app opens in the Sales view; see Sales view in the TradesWork app.
Owners, admins and dispatchers can open the field app too. Owners and admins open in the Owner view and can switch to the technician or sales screens; dispatchers open in the technician view. Customer service, accounting and view-only accounts get the Owner view (numbers only) and can't work appointments. See Owner view in the TradesWork app.
Steps#
Open TradesWork Field in a browser (available now)#
On your phone or tablet, open your company's TradesWork web address and add /tech to the end. For example, if your office signs in at
https://yourcompany.example, the field app is athttps://yourcompany.example/tech.Sign in. See Sign in to TradesWork Field for what's available today.
Add it to your home screen so it opens like an app:
iPhone or iPad (Safari): tap the Share button, then Add to Home Screen.
Android (Chrome): tap the menu, then Add to Home screen or Install app.
Open it from the new icon. Technicians land on Today, salespeople on the Sales view's Today, and owners on Business.
If you sign in to the office site as a technician#
Technicians who sign in to the office site don't see the office screens. They land on a page that says Your day is in TradesWork Field and asks them to open the app on their phone. When your company has the web address set up, that page also shows an Open in your browser button that takes you straight to the field app.
iPhone and Android apps (coming soon)#
TradesWork Field is built to run as a native app on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets (app name TradesWork Field). Store listings on the App Store and Google Play aren't published yet. Until they are, use the web version above. A few features only work in the native app:
Tap to Pay on the phone ("Tap to Pay works only in the iPhone and Android app.").
Sharing your location in the background while the app is closed.
Everything else in these articles works in the browser.
Allow the phone permissions#
The first time you use certain features, your phone or browser asks for permission. Allow them so the app can do its job:
Camera: to photograph equipment and work, and to scan data plates and part barcodes.
Photos: to add pictures from your library.
Location: to share where you are with the office while you're on shift (you can pause it any time).
Microphone: to record voice notes about your jobs.
If you said no by mistake, turn the permission back on in your phone's Settings (or your browser's site settings), then try again.
Settings that change this#
Settings › People › Employees & Role Permissions: invite technicians and salespeople, set their role, and the App view each person opens to.
Settings › Integrations › Mobile: the company's default wording (residential or commercial), location tags technicians see, and feedback sent from the app.
Settings › Integrations › GPS: location sharing rules and the monitoring notice technicians accept.
Settings › Integrations › Payment Processing: whether card payments and Tap to Pay show up in the app.
Tips#
Use a tablet for selling. In the Sales view on an iPad the day and the visit sit side by side and the proposal builder shows good, better and best next to each other.
The office onboarding checklist has a Try the field app step with an Open field app button. Owners can use it to walk a job end to end before the first technician starts.
Technicians and dispatchers can open a Practice company with demo jobs to learn the app without touching real customers. See Sign in to TradesWork Field.
Troubleshooting#
The /tech page won't load → no signal on the first visit, or the address is wrong → check you're using your company's TradesWork address with /tech at the end, and try again with signal.
"Your account can't use the field app yet" → your account doesn't have a role that works appointments or reads reports → ask your office for the Technician or Sales rep role, then sign in again.
The app opens in the wrong view → your admin set a different App view, or you switched on this device → use Switch view (see Switching app views).
Camera or photos don't open → permission was denied → turn on camera or photo access for the app (or the browser) in your phone's Settings.
No Tap to Pay button → you're using the web version, or it's off for your company → Tap to Pay needs the native app and the office has to turn it on.
FAQ#
Is there a separate app for the office? No. The office uses the TradesWork website. TradesWork Field is the technician app.
Do I need to update the web app? No. The web version updates itself when your company's TradesWork is updated. Reopen it to pick up the latest version.
When will the store apps be available? They're coming soon. Your office will let you know when you can download TradesWork Field from the App Store or Google Play.
Does it work on an iPad or Android tablet? Yes. It supports tablets in portrait and landscape.
Coming from ServiceTitan#
Same idea: ServiceTitan has a separate technician app (ServiceTitan Mobile). TradesWork Field plays the same role.
Different: today you open TradesWork Field in a browser at /tech rather than downloading it from a store. Native store apps are coming soon.
Where it lived: in ServiceTitan you downloaded the mobile app from the App Store or Google Play and signed in with your ServiceTitan username.
